Spotlight on Age Active

Age Active - Fitness for the Over Fifties

Well that WAS the idea, but now we’re “Age Active - Waiting to Be Over Covid”. From running 30 classes a week to doing nothing for four months. Overnight!

Not an untypical story, you’ll hear this up and down the country.

We started 30 years ago as a single Keep Fit class, which became two classes, which became three classes and Tai Chi as well, which became … you get the idea. At that time there were hardly any (by which I mean none at all!) activities for older people in Sheffield. Now it’s something the government wants to promote, which is commendable. As much as anything it’s the social side of the sessions, being involved in a group, that is of benefit, which makes the current situation so difficult.

One sunny morning in 2012 we moved all our classes to Victoria Hall, a very good move all round! The thing that struck me most was that when people enquired about the classes and I began to explain where we were, without fail they replied “Oh I know Victoria Hall”, it was somewhere people knew and felt comfortable with, a big plus when you’re taking that daunting first step!

The renovations and redecorations have been an added bonus, everything’s bright and clean, gleaming halls and sparkling toilets. All we need now is some customers to enjoy them! This will be a gradual process, I’m sure, but we’re all looking forward to welcoming people back and slowly getting our over fifties back to fitness!
